The conflict, with all of its technological advances and large numbers of troops, demanded leaders; men with the exceptional talent and strength. From the Civil War rose men like Robert E. Lee, one of the most gifted leaders this country has ever produced; Abraham Lincoln, who accepted his duties as president to its fullest and remaining firm to his convictions; and William Tecumseh Sherman, a brilliant strategist.
